Starting with home!

My students are learning the location of important states in our country. We start with our own state and branch out from there. We learn where Disney World and many grandparents live (Florida), we learn the edge states and where one of our Crew leaders is from (Maine). We look for states that mean something to us and those that we might have heard about on the news or from our parents.

Last year, my students knew fourteen without struggling. I think the children this year may top them. They already can find, Ohio, Texas, California, Florida, Michigan, Washington and Maine! We started learning New York today. The children are very proud of themselves and if an adult wanders our way during map work, we always "show off" our skills!
